HeatSmart Newton is a community-based, volunteer-led, clean heating and cooling initiative to help residents improve home comfort, lower their energy bills, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Sponsored by the City of Newton, the HeatSmart program works with our partner installer Muirfield Mechancial to help Newton residents make the switch from fossil fuels to air-source heat pumps and heat pump water heaters.
The goal of HeatSmart Newton is educate our residents about clean energy choices, to make it easier for Newton residents to find a competent installer, and to make homes feel more comfortable year-round while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In April 2023, HeatSmart Newton was extended to its fourth year with Muirfield Mechanical as a city-vetted installer. Together, we have helped to educate over 550 Newton residents through our website and outreach events, resulting in over 180 heat pump installations in our City.
Heat pumps move heat in and out of a building—much like an air conditioner that can also run backwards to provide heating. Cold climate heat pumps offered through HeatSmart Newton can provide high-efficiency heating and hot water even when it’s well below zero outside.
