An efficient, clean, environmentally-friendly solution for heating, cooling and hot water for your home.
HeatSmart Newton is a community-based, volunteer-led, clean heating and cooling initiative to help residents improve home comfort, lower their energy bills, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Sponsored by the City of Newton, the HeatSmart program works with our partner installers, Muirfield Mechancial and New England Ductless, to help Newton residents make the switch from fossil fuels to air-source heat pumps and heat pump water heaters.
HeatSmart Newton is part of the HeatSmart Mass Program supported by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources. Together, it’s our goal to make it easier for Newton residents to find a competent installer, conserve energy, and be more comfortable year-round while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In April 2021 , the City of Newton announced that HeatSmart Newton has been extended for a second year. The program will continue to work with city-vetted installers New England Ductless and Muirfield Mechanical, which together have helped over 75 Newton households update heating, cooling and hot water systems with efficient electric heat pump technology over the last year.
Heat pumps move heat in and out of a building—much like an air conditioner that can also run backwards to provide heating. Cold climate heat pumps offered through HeatSmart Newton can provide high-efficiency heating and hot water even when it’s well below zero outside.
Heat pumps can be affordable alternatives to fossil fuel-based heating and hot water, while also providing cooling to improve home comfort. At 2-4 times as efficient as electric space and water heaters, heat pumps can save you thousands of kWh, and hundreds of dollars, every year. All of these benefits are achieved while greatly reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
Insulating Your Home Maximizes the Benefits of a Heating & Cooling Upgrade
Start with a Free Home Energy Assessment through MassSave.
A home energy assessment can help you learn more about how your home uses (and loses) energy and can identify home energy improvements that can make you more comfortable, save you money, and improve the performance of a heat pump if you choose to install one.
Schedule a no-cost Home Energy Assessment with a MassSave Home Performance Contractor and get access to offers from the sponsors of the Mass Save program, such as no-cost LED light bulbs, advanced power strips, programmable thermostats, and up to 75% off approved insulation and 100% off air sealing.
The HeatSmart Mass program is operated by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) in partnership with the Department of Energy Resources (DOER) and powered by local volunteers and municipal officials. Learn more about the state’s efforts to promote clean heating and cooling here.
The HeatSmart Newton campaign is being coordinated by the City of Newton in conjunction with volunteers from Green Newton, Newton Mothers Out Front, and 350 Mass, Newton Node.
