An efficient, clean, environmentally-friendly solution for heating, cooling and hot water for your home.
HeatSmart Newton is a community-based, volunteer-led, clean heating and cooling initiative to help residents improve home comfort, lower their energy bills, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Sponsored by the City of Newton, the HeatSmart program works with our partner installers, Muirfield Mechancial and New England Ductless, to help Newton residents make the switch from fossil fuels to air-source heat pumps and heat pump water heaters.
The goal of HeatSmart Newton is educate our residents about clean energy choices, to make it easier for Newton residents to find a competent installer, and to make homes feel more comfortable year-round while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

In April 2022, the City of Newton completed an agreement to continue using New England Ductless and Muirfield Mechanical as city-vetted installers. Together, we have helped to educate over 450 Newton residents through our website and outreach events, and our installation partners have signed over 125 contracts for residential heating, cooling, and hot water installations in the City of Newton.
Heat pumps move heat in and out of a building—much like an air conditioner that can also run backwards to provide heating. Cold climate heat pumps offered through HeatSmart Newton can provide high-efficiency heating and hot water even when it’s well below zero outside.
Heat pumps can be affordable alternatives to fossil fuel-based heating and hot water, while also providing cooling to improve home comfort. At 2-4 times as efficient as electric space and water heaters, heat pumps can save you thousands of kWh, and hundreds of dollars, every year. All of these benefits are achieved while greatly reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
Insulating Your Home Maximizes the Benefits of a Heating & Cooling Upgrade
Start with a Free Home Energy Assessment through Mass Save.
A home energy assessment can help you learn more about how your home uses (and loses) energy and can identify home energy improvements that can make you more comfortable, save you money, and improve the performance of a heat pump if you choose to install one.
Schedule a no-cost Home Energy Assessment with a Mass Save Home Performance Contractor and get access to offers from the sponsors of the Mass Save program, such as advanced power strips, programmable thermostats, and at least 75% off approved insulation and 100% off air sealing.
HeatSmart Newton is a program managed by the City of Newton and local volunteers.
